Just about everyone in NZ knew someone or knew someone who knew someone who was one this flight - Flight 901 which on a sightseeing journey from Auckland to Christchurch flew straight into the snow-covered Mount Erebus - which eerily means darkness - with the loss of all 257 people on board.

Royal Commissioner Peter Mahon was appointed to investigate the causes of the World's fourth-worst air disaster. His account of the inquiry reads like a fast-moving contemporary detective story. The story of this tragedy still is controversial and is in the psyche of all New Zealanders.
