Secondhand.  The “Profiles in Monochrome” (1974) are vignettes of people who lived on the Coast either before the poet’s time or when he was a child. Some of the “profiles” are dispiriting, but collectively, they build up a convincing picture of a certain sort of community. 


This edition is limited to 200 copies.

This edition of 200 copies was printed and published in March 1974, being hand-set in 14-point Granby Light.

Product Information

New Zealand teacher, writer, bookseller and conservationist. He was born in London, England and emigrated to New Zealand at the age of four, growing up in the Nelson and West Coast districts.


Hooper taught at Greymouth High School and Westland High School.[1] For a number of years he owned and ran a bookshop called Walden Books in Greymouth, named after Thoreau's book which was a major influence on his views on nature and simple living.
