Poet, writer and teacher. He was born in London in 1922, the grandson of author Maurice Hewlett. He came to New Zealand with his parents in 1933 and originally worked in the New Zealand Herald as a printer. He attended Auckland Teachers College from 1949-51, graduated from the University of Auckland in 1954 and taught at Takapuna Grammer School until 1977. In 1960 he won first prize for his poem Go back Lazarus in the Cheltenham Festival Poetry Competition. He was regularly published and his poems, plays and talks were frequently broadcast.
