John Phillips worked as a photoreporter for Life from the 1930s to the 1950s, helping to shape the magazine. In this book he shares his experiences. He reported from London in the days of Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson, joined Cecil Beaton's glamorous party circuit in Paris, and was in Salzburg and Vienna when the Nazis marched in. Before the war he travelled through Poland, Rumania and Czechoslovakia, then New York and South America. Back in Europe during the war, he shot his famous photographs of partisan leader Tito. In the Middle East, he witnessed the first Arab-Israeli conflicts, accompanied the first oil mission to the King of Saudi Arabia, and reported on the reconstruction of war-torn Europe.
