Author(s): Philip Holden

Hunting | Secondhand

After his adventures as a meat shooter, so vividly described in Hunter By Profession, Philip Holden decided on a change of occupation- and found himself working for a rabbit board in Hawke's Bay. He rode a trailbike where before he had packed out carcasses on his shoulders. His quarry was ostensibly rabbits, hares, opossums, and he describes his reactions to this type of hunting with wry humour and frankness. But his heart was not really in it- the barbarism of trapping, the pitiful results of poisoning were equally distasteful. And so in his spare time he turned with relief and renewed interest to his old love- deer hunting. There are plenty of good hunting stories, as wellas many useful tips for shooers, in this third book by Holden. And thee is also a new awareness of the beauty and cuelty of the countryside.
