he Mountains of New Zealand provide a tremendous variety in alpine landscapes and attract large numbers of people, boioth New Zealanders and overseas visitors. Included in these landscapes are the volcanic mountains of the North Island - those of the volcanic plateau dominated by Mount Ruapehu, and the magnificent cone of Mount Egmont to the west of this region.
In the South Island of New Zealand the Southern Alps offer spectacular mountain scenery - these mountains being truly alpine in character, with icefields and glaciers in the higher portions of the mountain chain.
As portrayed in a number of the photographs, magnificent native forests are frequently an integral part of the New Zealand mountain scene - be they podocarp, kahami, or the extensive beech forests of the South Island.
The emphasis in the book is on pictorial quality, so as to convey not only an impression of alpine landscapes but also to capture the atmosphere or mood that can be experienced in New Zealand's mountains.
